LAURA MRKSA

, slow designer in Amsterdam (ig).

Rope Chair 04 in Lilac is one of the pieces in the Take a Seat Collection. The Thonet frame comes from a hidden second-hand store in my neighbourhood, which I discovered through a tiny door leading to 1,000m² of vintage treasures.

The Take a Seat collection is a part of the Liftovers project — an upcycling trajectory of my design practice. The collection consists of second-hand chrome tubular frames, iconic of the mid-century modern and space-age eras, restored and transformed with my hand-woven rope nets. Using an intuitive weaving process without predetermined patterns, the nets embody a dialogue between chance and order, blending chaos and structure. Weaving serves as a repairing technology, extending the lifespan of furniture while challenging the linear, consumption-driven lifecycle of objects.

The weaving technique draws inspiration from the invisible labor of traditional net-making, particularly the women in fishing communities who repaired and maintained nets. Through this lens, Take a Seat reflects on care, interconnectedness, and the unseen narratives behind objects. By prioritising craft, the series redefines the value of restoration and invites reflection on collective responsibility.
